Opening services

Applications for utilities services can be made through the mail or over the phone. KEN can assist customers can receive assistance with setting up utilities accounts.

Electricity

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) is the main provider of electricity in the Kanto region that covers Tokyo and Kanagawa, though a number of other electricity providers have recently entered the market.

Gas

Tokyo Gas provides gas in Tokyo and Yokohama. Someone will need to be home to let the service person in to activate the line.

*When using gas appliances, be sure to keep the area well ventilated. If you smell gas, turn off any appliances and call Tokyo Gas immediately.

*In the past few years, the electricity and gas markets have undergone liberalisation to allow for wider competition. You may find cheaper rates available from companies other than those listed above, or discounts for contracting for electricity and gas from the same company.

Water

Water and sewerage services are provided by the water companies of Tokyo and Yokohama cities.

Meter Reading Sheets & Bills

Electricity bills are delivered at the same time your meter is read. For gas and water, however, you may receive a meter reading sheet before the final bill arrives. This cannot be used to pay.

The actual bill will come as a two-part perforated slip with a barcode on one side. You can pay this at any bank or convenience store. Gas and electricity bills are usually monthly, while water will come every two months. You can also arrange to pay bills via bank account or credit card.
