Tokyo has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city in the world, but it is not the only place in Japan where you can dine out to your heart's content and never try everything. Yokohama is Japan's second biggest city and a dining mecca all of its own.
We will introduce six of the best restaurants and cafes in the Yokohama area for you to get started on your culinary explorations with.

1. Enoki-tei

image

Enoki-tei is a charming cafe housed in the former residence of an American public prosecutor who lived in Japan in the early 1900s. The house is almost 100 years old and built in the Western style of the Meiji era. It is located in the Yamate Hills area, one of the most prestigious areas of Yokohama.

You can eat indoors surrounded by beautiful antique furniture, or outdoors in the small garden dining area. The outdoor area is open to those with dogs. There is also a private room on the second floor which is open for bookings of up to six people for a special afternoon tea. If you prefer, you can also buy cakes separately for take-out.

Besides sweet treats, they also have meals such as English style sandwiches and burgers. We loved the one-person size afternoon tea which came with a scone and two pieces of cake, along with a tea.

This cafe was recently the setting for the TV drama "Muchaburi! I will be the President" and is thus said to be quite busy on weekends. We recommend sitting outside in the open-air garden as the wait is shorter and the garden is surrounded by greenery.

2. Keika Hanten

image

Yokohama is known for its large and bustling Chinatown. When you walk through Chinatown there is always something interesting to see, and many tasty things to eat. Picking up some street food and heading to the ocean-side Yamashita Park is always a lovely outing.

As for what Chinese food to choose, one restaurant we recommend is Keika Hanten. It's located in Chinatown and has cheap, down to earth prices. It's a little-known spot serving freshly cooked and locally made food, famous for its shrimp wontons.

They sell basic Chinese fare like wontons, noodles, spring rolls and soups.

Even though the locals know about Keika Hanten, few tourists visit as it is not signposted well and may pass you by unless you know to look for it.

We recommend the roasted pork and shrimp wonton set. The wontons are nice and large so you will be pleasantly full. The prices are under 1000 yen, so you may wish to order several dishes to share as a group so that you can try more things.

3. INDU Yokohama

image

Yokohama is a world class city and has amazing options for a diverse range of cuisines. For Indian food, we love Indu Yokohama, a small and authentic restaurant specialising in Indian wines and South Indian cuisine. The chef comes from the oldest five-star hotel in India, Oberoi, and uses only high quality, fresh ingredients. The restaurant uses minimal oils and salts, instead relying on freshly ground fragrant spices and organic vegetables of the highest quality.

It is a very intimate restaurant, with just 8 seats at the two tables and 9 counter seats. There are an additional 4 seats on the outdoor terrace where dogs are allowed.

The food is said to be good for the body, incorporating seasonal Ayurvedic recipes. Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine from India which is more than 3000 years old. The belief is that you should eat certain types of food to maintain a healthy body and mindfulness. Vegan options are available here, so this is a good choice for those needing to cater to vegans or vegetarians.

The lamb dosa, with its explosion of tastes and spices, comes highly recommended - many people say it's the best they've ever had. The quality of the ingredients is beyond what you get in a regular Indian restaurant. This is good quality, authentic and healthy food.

Sushidokoro Mashiko is a sushi restaurant located a 4-minute walk from Ishikawamachi Station which is a favorite amongst locals. The chef, who trained at a famous sushi restaurant in Tsukiji, uses traditional techniques to make sushi. He personally visits the market every morning to purchase fresh fish, and serves Edomae nigiri and a la carte dishes using the highest quality seafood.

The restaurant is clean and comfortable, with nine comfortable counter seats and two sets of eight seater tables, and the counter seats allow you to enjoy watching the chef making sushi in front of you.
